  • HISTORY
In 1996, Nancy Robb Dunst gathered eight of her artists friends to discuss and share their artistic ideas, visions, and processes. The purpose was to pull artists together to develop a common bond. This loosely organized group of visionaries laid the groundwork for our growth to almost 200 artists, now known as the Sedona Visual Artists’ Coalition (aka SVAC or “The Coalition”). Sedona Visual Artists' Coalition became a 501c3 educational and charitable organization in 2006 and was profiled in the May 2007 issue of Sedona Monthly Magazine.
  • PURPOSE
The purpose of the Sedona Visual Artists’ Coalition is to create a supportive visual arts community which provides educational, exploratory, and social opportunities. This community of professional and emerging artists from the greater Sedona area work in both 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional art, and encompasses many mediums: oils, acrylics, watercolor, fiber, wood, glass, clay, metal, film, and mixed media.

One goal of the Coalition is to embrace community by pushing the artistic envelope and, thus, create a dialogue between the artists and the public. To raise awareness we choose an important or controversial issue and create an annual exhibition about it. Past annual fall shows have dealt with topics such as 9/11, Aging, Water, Dreams, Housing, and Creativity, giving the community and SVAC members the opportunity to look at an issue through many different perspectives.

  • ACTIVITIES
Monthly meetings are planned to share work and techniques, opportunities and events, and in general have a friendly inspiring experience. Most meetings are preceded by a potluck and social time, followed by a brief business meeting and a 45 minutes - 1 hour presentation on a topic of interest to the general membership.

Supported by a grant from the Sedona Arts and Culture Commission, SVAC launched a Mentoring Program which partners Coalition members with High School and College students to work together on a one-on-one basis.

The organization has been involved with designing collaborative sculptures in the West Sedona Park; painting an art car for the Scottsdale Contemporary Museum Car parade, representing artists on the Sedona Arts & Culture Commission, presenting Candidate's for the Arts Forum to Sedona’s City Council, and initiating and writing art columns in local newspapers. We have set up visits to artists studios and foundries.

SVAC has made monetary contributions to the Sedona Art Center's Community Gallery, the Verde Valley Sanctuary (a homeless shelter for women), Humane Society, Canyon Moon Theatre and Gardens for Humanity. Some other activities that keep SVAC members active in our community include interactive artistic programs in conjunction with the Sedona Community Center, and heading up drives for the Sedona Food Bank and Toys for Tots programs.

  • EXHIBITIONS
SVAC-sponsored exhibitions include the annual members exhibition in the fall, an ‘Open Studios’ tour each May, and theme shows at various community locations including Imagine Art, Sedona City Hall, the Sedona Art & Technology Center at Yavapai College, Sedona Art Center, Old Market Place, and at Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village above Rene's Restaurant. In 2007, SVAC partnered with the Sedona Public Library to produce our first "Book Transformed" show, and for several years SVAC has sponsored the annual "Sustainable Visions" exhibition centered on ecological issues, also at the library. In 2006, the “Behind Closed Doors” exhibition at the Sedona Art Center's Community Gallery dealt with the subject of abuse.

SVAC members provided artwork for "Art in Public Places" displayed at City Hall and sponsored by the Sedona Arts and Culture Commission. The traveling exhibition, "Embracing Time: A Celebration Of Aging" was shown in Flagstaff, Tucson, Phoenix, as well as Sedona.
