Statement:
Presentation Gift Envelope
Modeled on the Japanese tradition of Artful Presentation of the Gift, this envelope was inspired by the work of a Japanese cultural exchange artist, displayed at the Berea, Ky. Visitors and Art Center.
Combining paper folding adorned with washi paper and Mizuhiki cording for closure, this is one in my series exploring the Japanese symbolism of artful Presentation, as a visual gift, in addition to the gift within.
To enclose your gift, gently slide the band, insert your gift, and once again center the band with its decoration.
One might enclose a significant document, personal note, gift of monetary value.

Washi expresses the beauty and simplicity of decorating simple objects with fine Japanese, handmade "rice" papers. The term can be used to describe the object, the paper, or the technique. In the Japanese tradition, Washi eggs, and other Washi objects, are displayed as decorative art, prized for their beauty and inspirational qualities. Within diverse social cultures on earth, the egg often symbolizes life and all that is essential for sustained life: shelter, bounty of food, and rebirth.
