2010 Open Studios Tour Cancelled
At the December 3 SVAC Board Meeting, it was concluded not to further pursue Open Studios in the spring of 2010 for the following reasons:
No one volunteered to chair or co-chair the event Poor turnout at the orientation meeting at the library Unlikely or little (city) funding support Perceived over saturation of artist open home/studios and other shows this fall Maybe it is time to take a break from the event and re-energize it in 2011.
We are sorry to disappoint those of you who were looking forward to participating in and visiting the studios.
If you feel strongly about keeping Open Studios for the future, please let board members know that, and consider chairing the event. It is necessary to have organizers for any event to occur.
Meanwhile, we are happy to announce a proposal which is being pursued for a juried exhibition this spring. The past SVAC surveys have indicated this is something membership would welcome. Along with the show, there will be an accompanying book showcasing the artists. Jerry Buley is chairing this effort. More information on this will be forthcoming and it will be discussed at the next general meeting, January 21, at KSB.

With an MFA in Ceramics from the University of Wales in the UK and an international award winning exhibition record, Pates is the lead faculty for the 3-D arts. A specialist in clay and glaze chemistry, her work with local materials can be seen at Gallery 527 or her studio at the Old Mingus High Schools Studios, both in Jerome. In addition to pottery, clay and mixed media sculpture, Woof specializes in kiln building and often invites students to fire in his own experimental and wood fired kilns. With extensive teaching experience, Woof also works as a liaison with upcoming young artists from Verde Valley high schools. Ceramics Course Descriptions Ceramics I & II (ART 120 & 121) Designed for complete beginners, professionals-in-training and dedicated amateurs. All students will have the opportunity to load and fire kilns. Ceramics III & IV (ART 220 & 221) These semi-self-directed courses allow the intermediate or advanced ceramics student the opportunity to create a personal project with the support of instructors and staff. Topics can include advanced pursuits of techniques and/or ideas, and work can be functional or sculptural. Students will have access to all of the Ceramics facilities, as well as the support and expertise of the instructors. Prerequisite: Ceramics I and II, or approval of the instructor. El Valle Artists’ Association Meeting: The History and Process of Glass Beads
Thursday, January 14 at 12:30 pm Evangel Worship Center, 1380 E Mingus Ave in Cottonwood
Handmade glass beads are beautiful; making them can be a bit tricky at times. Every bead begins as a glob of melted glass on a rod; from there, the artists’ skill and choice of technique can make all the difference. As can chance. You don’t always know what you will get until the bead has cooled, says glass artist Nancy White. At Thursday’s demo, she will share both the history and process of lampworking. Bring dark glasses if you have them, so you can see clearly as the bead is worked in the torch. For more information, please call 634-8623
