Several Sedona artists have had incredible success using a new and unique sculpting material called Winterstone.  It was developed by Lorne Winters and is versatile, permanent and a direct modeling medium. The Sedona Visual Artists’ Coalition wants to share these exciting encounters with this "artist cement/clay" by bringing Lorne here from Canada to spend two days with us. This is specifically designed to be affordable for artists, and reservations will be taken on a first come first serve basis. We can accommodate 35 people for the first day, and 20 people for the second day. The deadline for reservations in November 20th. A waiting list will be available.

On the first day Mr. Winters will concentrate on lecture, video/slides, and some hands on demonstration. This will include all the critical information that is so important to know when using this material. For example: the technique of reinforcing, build up, and surface finishing, the best proportions of powder and water, exterior vs interior needs, etc. On Sunday, it will be a completely hands on experience, so that the artists can become familiar with the material, and what it can and can not do. If there is time, he will also cover application of patinas.

Winterstone is an engineered and formulated sculpting medium developed by Lorne P. Winters (a civil engineer turned sculptor) This material, Winterstone, have exterior or interior use. It meets a number of criteria that sculptors need:

  • Can be directly modeled and carved

  • Require no secondary process like firing or heat application

  • Requires no special or expensive tools or equipment

  • It is safe and easy to use

  • Weather resistant

  • Allows complete freedom with regard to size, shape, form, texture and patina

It’s a very versatile material; feels like clay, hardens to stone, and is easy to work with ending with a smooth or textured surface. Because of its flexibility, a sculpture in Winterstone can be shaped against natural balance. It is easy to work with and the can have a bronze or copper patina applied. Although the material is white, it can be colored integrally with powdered pigment,, so that it is the same color throughout. More of this information will be detailed in the workshop. This is an opportunity most sculptors/artists will not want to miss!
